Welcome to Goudleeratelier Van Soest

Sebastiaan van Soest is the second generation keeping the ancient craft of gilded leather alive in the Netherlands — a tradition his father H.A.B. van Soest started in 1970. In his atelier in Wateringen, he produces every piece by hand — for museums, restoration projects, and private collections worldwide.

Our craftsmanship

Each hide passes through weeks of handwork. Sebastiaan combines traditional techniques with contemporary design — for wall coverings, furniture, fashion, and collector’s pieces.

What is gilded leather?

Gilded leather is made by applying fine layers of silver to leather, then sealing it with a yellow varnish. What begins as silver leather acquires the deep, living golden lustre the material has been known for since the sixteenth century. Sebastiaan continues this centuries-old craft in his atelier — every piece made entirely by hand.
