Conservation & restoration
I learned the craft of gilded-leather making from my father, H.A.B. van Soest — one of the pioneers in the conservation and restoration of gilded leather in the Netherlands.
Beyond creating new gilded leather, I also conserve and restore historical pieces. The aim is always conservation first; restoration is reserved for cases where it is truly necessary.
Seventeenth- and eighteenth-century gilded leather is allowed to show its age — the patina is part of its character. When restoration is required, the newly added patches must remain discreet, supporting the original without competing with it.
