Featured: The first bag of Goudleer-atelier Van Soest
48 hours of handwork made this possible...
This bag was created in collaboration between Goudleer-atelier Van Soest and Mutsaers Lederwaren and is produced in an edition of at most two. Goudleer-atelier Van Soest is the only gilded-leather maker in the Netherlands. The owner of the atelier is the second generation keeping the ancient craft of gilded leather alive.

Gilded leather is leather to which a silver layer is applied, then sealed with a golden-yellow varnish that produces the beautiful golden sheen. Using a mould, the gilded leather is embossed in relief, after which it is hand-painted and optionally further decorated. We work exclusively with water-based paints and varnishes that meet modern regulations. The vegetable-tanned leather from which the bag is made ensures a crafted, honest and environmentally conscious product.

Gilded leather has its origin in the 14th century and was used, among other things, as wall covering and upholstery in palaces and castles. The combination of the ancient craft and the use of rich materials gives the bag its unique appearance.
